[40d] two bugs: champion oddity and food woes
« on: November 14, 2008, 10:50:23 am »

ok, llets start with setting the scene.    of the first migrant wave, i had several guys train as wrestlers and got them to champion wrestlers.

now, i have a tendancy to kill anyone who tries to claim a craft shop for artifacts, so i had a few failures, and then a bowyer went fey.  i let him build the bow, which turned out rather nice.     then suddenly, one of my champs who is still set for unarmed walked over and picked it up and refuses to drop it..   but will gladly use it at the archery range.    ive changed his weapon prefs and everything, but i cannot make him drop the weapon.

ive decided to let him keep it for now and build his skill with it, but its still an annoyance.

edit:  rather than starting a second thread, ill add this second one in here.

this is the SECOND time that this has come up for me.  i have a fort of about 40 and all of a sudden they are refusing to eat anything.    i ran out of food at one point and temporarilly added the [no_eat] flag to their raws and until my farms had gotten up and running properly.  i removed the tag again after i had 100 plants and more coming, and things ran fine for a while...    but then suddenly everyone in the for are all hunting vermin for food at the same time, despite i now have over 300 plants of two different types.

Soldiers never dropping artifacts is a known problem.

What types of plants are you growing?  Not all plants are edible.

Also dwarves do have a sense of 'gotten tired of'.  If all you have been feeding your dwarves is plump helmets then it is likely that they have had enough of that and want something different.  That they will actually starve to death from this dislike could be called a bug.  That they don't tell you they can no longer eat a given thing could also be called a bug.  The behavior itself is a feature, and definitely needs to exist.

its not the plants thats the problem.    i have prickle berries and plump helmets galore.   and i also have about 300 dwarven wine roasts that are being ignored as well.

the food bug is the relation to the [no_eat] tag.     from what i can tell, after i removed the tag from them their hunger levels decreased normally, but they wouldnt go and eat as they should, as if that part of the code was still turned off.

edit:

interesting development.   i let them all starve, and curiously, just before the last baby died i got an immigrant wave....     12 glorious slaves souls to do my hauling...     and they eat and drink normally, without me changing anything.

Maybe they all thought they had the [NOEAT] tag, even though they didn't.  Like how a dragon thinks that [FIREIMMUNE] means he can take magma baths, but he can't.

and sigh...   turns out things werent working again and all those immys starved too.

good thing i kept a zip of the initial embark save...    it was such a wonderful location....   sand, magma, HFS, and an underground pool, with a section of forest too.

round two seems to be going well....    modeling the fort this time after a fallout vault...    gonna build an above ground city over the vault entrance.   :P

edit:

goddammit...    nevermind everyone...    i found out why...    i cant believe i forgot about this...    i now know why everyone starved all those times...   i forgot i added the [carnivore] tag and thus they wouldnt eat plants...

god i feel stupid.
