[38c] Ambush and Ocean bugs
« on: March 18, 2008, 02:23:00 pm »

Alright I was playing a beach front map against a haunted ocean when a tantrum cascade killed all but 1 of my dwarves. Then a few days later I got an immigration wave of 25 people. Trying to kill them all off to get a clean reclaim I gave them all hunting.  Unfortunately the scariest creature I got was a cougar. So I abandoned them and attempted a reclaim.  The first bug was that my tunnels I had dug under the ocean started to fill with water.
The strip mine I setup about 7 z levels down was entirely filled from a few squares of 7/7 and an upper level temporary living quarters started to flood.
The second bug regards the 26 "friendly" dwarves who were left all continued to hunt. However when they were spotted by the map animals they spammed the "An ambush has appeared." message.
Unfortunatly I have no way to post the save because it isn't on this computer.

Yeah, I've encountered this bug too.

Any fortress abandoned on an ocean map, anything, even if it is entirely walled off, plugged up and locked down;

if it is below the level of the ocean surface will be filled entirely with water.

Just backing you up on this, hope it gets looked at some day.

I just confirmed the flooding issue on a pocket world.  That changes my plans for my undersea fortress...

Edit: seems to be that 7/7 water is generated only directly under the ocean tiles: a shaft dug vertically far from the shore, then horizontally all the way to be under the ocean, is only slowly filling up the lowest level.

I don't understand this bug yet.  Is it starting the tunnels out filled on reclaim , turning them into some kind of aquifer, or both?

From what I can remember I first noticed it when the farm that was one tile under the ocean started flooding.  It seemed to flood about half as fast as an aquifer but I don't think that it was an aquifer. Come to think of it it went about as quick as a river I tried to branch but not damn.  When I finally noticed the quarry about 5 or 6 levels down flooding the far points closest to the 2 ocean edges were 7/7 and and slowly encroaching wave was spreading.  What it seems to be doing is creating an ocean source on any square that was the ocean biome that was mined out below sea level. According to the embark screen there was an 1 layer aquifer under the ocean but I never touched it.

Here's an example:

I dug out a hole in the beach sand, it goes down 4 Z levels, is a perfect rectangle.  I kept it blocked off from the water, though, so it was just an empty hole.  I created a construction within the hole, namely, a boat, and then once the boat was waterproofed, I flooded the hole by removing the divider wall between the hole and the ocean, letting the water flow in until the waterlevel reached the original height of the ocean.

My construction, though, when in dwarf mode, remains free of water inside the ship.  All of the possible entries for water and blocked off with hatches, and there is nowhere for a leak to get through.  Waves hit the bow and flow off harmlessly.

But when I abandon and reclaim it,

The boat is entirely filled with water inside.

Also, any tunnels I dug below the surface level of the ocean water are filled with water as well.  It's as if the ocean ignored any barriers and flowed through any unoccupied open space below the water level, ignoring walls, doors, hatches, etc.

I can upload screenshots or just a save for you to test if that would help, but I've had it happen on 2 different maps, and the OP's post confirms it that it is definitely a reproduceable bug.

The area under the ocean started with 7/7 water.  Slowly, that water flowed to fill the rest of the tunnel.  It *seemed* on short observation that the water was getting regenerated somehow (because it was 6/7 or 7/7 under the ocean, and also in the rest of the tunnel), but I didn't check what happened if I pumped it out.

I expect that this has to do with the game's handling of the ocean biome. When you first enter an ocean map, the game fills every space under the sea level with water. So as an adventurer, as you enter any ocean map with a fortress in it, all the below-sea-level sections get filled up instead of being checked for waterproofing beforehand.

Okay, I'll note the ocean bug down now.  Bugs from old dwarves are numerous and will be resolved by handling the migrants later on.

I've just had a very similar issue.  I've recorded a movie of it.  The tunnel in question was filling up (started off half full, and the water was moving in), so I can only assume something became an aquifer, although in retrospect it may have just been the 7/7s equalizing.

Additionally, and more troubling was the fact that my reclaim dwarves and wagon started out in the wave zone.  Basically, there were three-four seconds of it looking like the waves were bugged, then they started and washed over the wagon...

Edit : This is in 39f
