[40d] Dismatled stairs can't be rebuilt
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:52:12 pm »

When you dismantle constructed up/down stairs they drop their materials in the square they were in. This square is innaccessible from below because there is no down stair. The up/down stair cannot be reconstructed because the stone is in the way. The stone cannot be moved because it is inaccessible.

Ok I tested the repeatability and it didnt repeat at another location with other materials. I don't know what special circumstances caused this so I guess it wont get fixed. Just for the record the normal situation seems to be that the materials fall down and don't stop on stairs but wait till they hit a floor at the bottom. In this bug that didnt happen.

I suspect tried to construct the stairs from above. (constructing downward is not possible)

When the tile is accessable from the side, there should be no problem constructing a stairs on top of a stairs, even with the rock there.

Try to test accessability of the target tile by sentry-ing a soldier there.

Okay this ones a little conceptual. 1st you have a section of stone. 2nd a dwarf carves a circular stair well from the stone giving access to above. 3rd anouther dwarf being ordered to remove the stairs bashes out the remaining stone creating a open space. 4th the dwarf order to create a stair out of air is confused.

When you want a stairwell on openspace (ie you removed the stair that was there) you need to build a stairwell instead of carve a stairwell. This is done in the 'b' (building) menu under "C" (constructions) selecting stairs and require a stone block or a stone to construct.

*edit* after actually reading the above again I realise ive jumped the gun and gotten the wrong end of the stick. It is like the above person has stated, if youve got no access to the lower z level then the dwarf cant construct a stairwell into that open space. I suggest you carve a stairwell into a nearby wall to give you acess to that level then build the stairwell and remove the otherone (if its in a spot you want as a wall construct a wall there.

There was accessibility to both the top and bottom level. The problem was that the between the top and the bottom required leaving the fortress out the main gate and climbing to the top of the mountain. The dwarves would climb to the top of the maountain, and then would just go no path to site, it is not certain that stones were even causing this as I would expect item blocking site not path no found. Also and importantly, the correct behaviour is that the stone should have dropped to the next level. I have another  example of a stone hanging in midair in the same fort. I mined out a square with a ramp on top and the stone was on the ramp (at least I think thats how I happened). Could be related to the longstanding unsupported ramps bug. or maybe not.
