It doesn't seem like it captured the atmosphere as far as I see in the trailers.

In comic when they punch someone it doesn't look much elegant, it is pretty bloody and brutal. When they punch someone in the movie it will probably be in slowmotion and probably rather pleasant to watch.

I saw the long preview last night at Quantum of Solace and let me first say that-

*slight jump with visible edit*

-nyway, on to the Watchmen trailer.  I still trust Zack Snyder.  The only problem I had with it was that I didn't care for Doctor Manhattan's voice.  In the comic, he's given blue speech bubbles, and I always imagined his voice sounding nothing like that of a normal human, but in that preview, he sounded pretty much like "just some dude in a blue suit".  Other than that, I didn't see a single thing to make me think that this movie will be less than awesome.

I'm still geeking the hell out, but I gotta say - Rorschach's voice is a little too Christain Bale "I'M BATMAN GRRRRR" for me right now. He was described in the graphic novel as having a very monotone, uneasy voice, and right now he just seems like he's being deliberately too grimdark and showy.

And it looks like we got the first glimpses of the no-squid ending. That'll... be interesting.

Psh, let the inner geek flow:
1. Girl and blue dude don't go, "do it for me." They had a one comic book issue debate over the value of human existence! It ended with some surprising conclusions and the girl in tears.
2. They never had their picture taken. In fact, they couldn't stand to be near each other. The ones that did were their previous generation, the Minutemen.
3. Their costumes are supposed to look goofy and stupid. That's the point.

Rarrgh, geekdom.

I'll confess, I share all of the complaints of umiman, Dasleah, and Bromor Neckbeard.

Dunno what that says about me.

Considering that Rorschach speaks quite a lot in the novel, counting the journal, I too am getting unnerved by that choice of voice.

It bothered me a lot in Dark Knight and I didn't even have huge expectations with that film.

It makes me fear that they'll cock up the character in other ways too. Like making him act like a cool, badass superhero and not like, well Rorschach, our beloved emotionless sugar-lover.

EDIT: Oh yeah. I wonder how many of the few million wordplays they'll have in the movie. It's sad that if Black Freighter isn't in the movie, the brilliance of "Raw Shark" cannot be used in full potential.

From the script I've read, the new ending is:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It... could work. I mean, as long as theme of "evil for the greater good - 35 MINUTES AGO" is still there, it could carry. But I know I'm not the only one who wanted to see those pages of absolute devastation in the comic plastered all over the big screen in all their horrifying beauty.

You know what I'll probably miss most in this? The newsagent and the little kid. The psychiatrist and his wife. Little things like that. Black Freighter won't be in the cinema, yeah, but they are animating it and sticking it on the DVD, taking the running length on it to 3 and half hours  :D

Seriously, the newsdude/kid segments were amazing-awesome.

And the Squid still should've been how it was done, I think...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So big of a spoiler it warrants a second spoiler layer within the spoiler.

THIS!  THIS!  THIS!  You put words to exactly what was nagging me about the trailer.  That line sounded completely shallow in the trailer and quite frankly, didn't belong there in the first place.  If they trivialize what is basically the central struggle for those two characters, I'd very much doubt they can do justice to the story.

To be honest though, I just breezed through that issue. Their argument was pathetic and drivel and from my own perspective, no different from "do it for me". However, this is just my opinion as I'm a 100% materialist capitalist whore who doesn't give a rats ass about the "miracle of conception". It was a good effort though and not something you see outside of a 200 page thesis.

umiman, I disagree.  I found Dr. Manhattan's perspective alien and interesting and in the end he wasn't even doing it for her, he was doing it for him.

Basleah, after having an ending spoiler in the trailer I overlooked pointed out to me I caved and read your spoiler there.  I am shocked.  They took the best comic book ever and ripped the beating heart out of it for the sake of a trashy production.  This is a goddamn crime.

Basleah

 ;D

Yeah, Manhattan's and Laurie's discussion on Mars was always an important thing to me - largely because that issue is fantastic for showing just how Manhattan ticks, his non-linear view of time. It was then that you start to realise "oh fuck, he's just not Superman - he's Supergod. How the hell do we convince something like that to even register human thoughts and needs? Why does God need to save the world?"

I am so going to rage if they don't have his awesome "We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings." line in the movie. I need to dig up that script again (for those of you who want to look for it, it's the Alex Tse rewrite of the David Hayter script - apparently not much changed between the two)

I particulary liked that scene because of his explanation of how time works, that there basically nothing humans can do it was just meant to happen that way. It got seriously weird when he started telling Laurie about the future and stuffs.

Like the Tralfamadorians?

Anyway, I just picked the book up today.  I'm at the first big wave of text, so far it's pretty good.  Unfortunately, I know he's supposed to be monotone, but he still sounds like Movie Rorschach to me.  Oh well.  Manhattan's voice for me is a kind of deep monotone.

EDIT:  Finished it, after I learned about Rorschach's past, his voice changed for me, into a kind of Anton Chigurh-esque monotone.  I think it fits him pretty well, his omission of pronouns and copulas suggest some kind of accent, like Anton had.
