Cramming for exams
« on: November 15, 2008, 03:02:49 pm »

Down here in the southern hemisphere summer is nearing and with it the school year. However, all is not well in the southern hemisphere with the end of school comes external exams. Exams that I haven't studied for. Exams that will determine if I get into my chosen university or if I get a place in the halls of residence or even if I get a scholarship. Basically the reason for this depressive topic is to ask for some help in cramming for my biology exam on Monday. I have never crammed before as I have always studied leading up to exams. But when it comes to one of the most important exams in my life, I procrastinate. I am a fool.

After my 3 hour biology exam, on Wednesday I have a 3 hour English exam then next Monday I have a mathematics exam, next Tuesday physics and finally Friday with chemistry. The funny thing is that I am only really happy about my chemistry revision and that is the furthest away.

So what do the wise and mighty Bay12 forum community think I should do? How exactly do you cram. Do you just read your notes over and over again?

I can't really help that much; I've always been a strangely good test-taker. I'd recomend disconecting your internet, disabling DF, brewing a cupof tea, make a list of important topics for each field, then get a good grasp of them one by one.

Also, learn the meanings of as many words as possible, often times you can pick out the answer on the basis of words that have similar meanings.

For example:

How are Borgles usually recieved in scoiety?

A) Borgles are never well recieved.
B)Borgles are always well recieved.
C) It depends on the Borgle's borgle.

Now, if you know that Borgles do, in fact, have a borgle, you can assume that it must be important (it was mentioned in the material, no?) Therefore, C is the most logical choice.

I hope that this helped.

I'm the last person in the world to ask for advice on studying.  I don't.  Like, at all.  I take extensive and meticulous notes during lectures, which my photographic memory then gives me material to work with.  But if outside reading is required I'm doomed.  Usually I speed-read as much material as I can the day or so before the exam.

Essays work the same way for me.  I've turned in exactly one assignment on time this semester.  I don't expect to pass anything with better than a C, and I may have already failed one class.  I've got a paper to write by tomorrow afternoon (got to leave it at the office during the weekend or it'll be too late to accept), do some homework and study for a Spanish test by Monday, and find and read a couple books by Wednesday, ready to talk about my research for ten minutes.  Oh and I've got a forum game to polish off and bail out of.

I've been downloading past exam papers from the NCEA website: (http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/) and learning what I have to study the most.

I wrote this while cramming for mine:
http://www.create-games.com/article.asp?id=1941

It's got a few things that don't apply everywhere, but cramming gives me insights and I thought they'd fit great into an article.
