Am I the only one who enjoys reading a four hundred word combat log? ???
I like skimming over the funnier parts.
I like counting up all the body parts so I can make sure to pick them all up.
I only collect the whole body if it's the demonic leader of a goblin civ.  I will then occasionally use it as a weapon.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

I like hunting heads. Goblin heads mostly, their rare enough to make me want to grab them. And of course after a hard fought battle, if I happen to behead them, I'll grab that to. Course late in game, nothing but a stray arrow can kill my character. And by then, some arrows bounce right off him. With out being blocked. Insane.

My current adventurer (using the legendary lands mod) arrived in the city of Tombspool to find out that it was almost exclusively inhabited by children. There are dozens of them, and no parents. When inquired about their family they talk for great length about their parents and relatives, but they just aren't there. So far I only saw a single adult, a guard left behind to guard the children, but the guy was fast asleep.

Then the combat spam started. An endless stream of messages about mountain goats attacking defenseless children. Elaborate descriptions on how the poor children are being maimed and tortured to death by the beasts. My adventurer is aimlesly running around trying to find and slay the foul creatures, but they are nowhere to be found. Meanwhile innocent children are dying and my adventurer who somehow perceives every detail about their death is slowly losing his sanity.

So yes, we definitely need an indication for the direction of the combat, possibly replacing the spam with some generic message if you can't actually see the battle. Something like "You hear the sounds of distant fighting to the northwest, deep below you" would be fine.

Even just have a "battle" symbol show up on the compass guide anywhere there has been fighting in the last several turns

But yeah, you shouldn't get gory details of combat you can't see - that makes sense just as much from a logic/realism point of view as it does in terms of annoyance
