Is it possible to move power up Z-levels?
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:11:21 am »

Reading through the wiki indicates ways to move power down, and I managed that, but it mentions nothing about moving it up.  Nothing I've tried has managed to move it up either.  Am I missing something, or can it just not be done?

gear assemblys on top of each other. or if it is more than 1 z level then gear, vertical axles as much as needed, and then gear again

Yes, haven't you ever seen the water tower. i am currently pumping out an underground area that i flooded with water from a river, my bad.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

And don't forget to channel out the squares first, or it won't work.
Then build bottom - up

Things that use power (such as pumps) also convey power.
so, to avoid powerloss from gears etc, I usually try to build mine in a vertical stack.

This also means, that you do not need gears to convey power between pumps etc. Only when power needs to go around a corner.

there is a great image in the wikie under "screw pump" that shows you how to make a tower.

otherwise use gears for one level, axels for multiple.

Thought I'd had that covered, turned out I was trying to put the gear into the square next to the one I channeled.  That explains a lot.  Pity it didn't work the way I'd hoped, although now I could probably turn half my map into a lake if I turn on both screw pumps.

The stack is king, the stack is Armok. A simple scree pump stack goes:

Level 1:
Solid (Soon to be wet)
Solid (Solid bit of pump)
Solid (Passable bit of pump)
Chasm (Water under here)

Level 2:
Chasm (Water from fist pump)
Solid (Passable bit of pump)
Chasm (Solid bit of pump & Power transfer)
Solid (Soon to be wet)

Level 3:
Reverse Level  2

Level 4:
Same as level 2

Repeat.

You have to hook this to a power source.

Remember, one pump sucks a heck of a lot of water. I have an underground river, that fed a big room via 3 (1 tile wide) access pipes, and one pump sucks the room dry enough that I can cut tower caps in there.

My current fort transfers power from a windmill array down to a pump stack above that room, then transfers power to another pump stack that takes the water up a waterfall tower (That is located to make mist near my entrance), the runoff from that fills the bottom z-level of my upper moat (more waterfalls), that then drains into my lower moat (more waterfalls), the currently drains into a dwarf made stream (more waterfalls).
