*question answered*
« on: November 01, 2008, 05:58:41 pm »

In an attempt to rule my magma with an iron fist, I unleashed an aquifer on the underground magma pipe, sealing the top with a layer of obsidian.

Digging into the layer that was formerly the topmost layer of magma, I punched a channel down to the magma below just before the cusp of the season, when (I think) magma pipes refill.

Unfortunately, nothing happened; is magma refilling annual, or am I misinterpreting the mechanics? The wiki says this:

Quote
Magma flows up from a direct vertical line from the bottom of a Volcano or Magma Pipe only. Otherwise, its level may rise only by dripping more magma from above, and new magma may only distribute itself by moving down or to the sides, but never up.

No, I tried just punching a hole in it on the floor where the magma used to be.

So there is an open magma tile? Also, make sure that it's roughly in the center. Or at least in a tile that is over one of the very bottom tiles of the pipe without interruption.

Magma pipes slowly refill continually. Not just once a season.

Emphasis on slowly, because I forgot to italicize it.

Ensure your hole is above one of the tiles that says "lava flow".  Those are the ones that generate the  pressure.

But it is a slow process.  I punched three holes above a "lava flow" once because I didn't know that it generated pressure, and lava came into that room relatively quickly...but even three years later, the room had yet to be filled.

Well, I've gotten it to work; it's not full enough that my forges stop flashing, but it'll get there soon enough, if it got to 3.5/7 already.

New problem: Fire snakes! Do they burn their way out of cages if untamed?

No, but uncaged ones can burn wooden barrels and bins.

Actually that's not true.  I have two forts that have been around for at least 7 game years each.  Each one also has a booze stockpile right next the magma pipe.  I haven't had a single explosion.

I refer you to creature_subterranean.txt, where fire snakes not only have [IMMOLATE], but also [FIXED_TEMP:14000] (hotter than magma, that).

This is getting freaky. 80 prepared meals in a <30 fortress and they're still munching on all the vermin.

I might just have to cancel my planned bear farm or start exporting all my meat.
