Dictator for Life: Rigging Elections and Killing Competitors.
« on: October 31, 2008, 11:20:00 pm »

On embark, I found a dwarf with a particularly delightful set of leadership traits; preference for intimidation, immunity to sympathy, stress capacity, immense friendliness, confidence, organization and imagination. So, basically, Hitler, but nicer. He also has a cat.

For once in my noble-murdering life, my hand on the execution lever has been stayed for this fellow. I would now like to see to it that he is made Dictator for Life of my fortress.

The current plan is to use deathtraps to kill off anyone who is elected that is not him; I assume that if mayorhood is decided on number of friends, and all people with more friends than him are executed, then surely he will remain in office. is a new election held when the mayor dies, or is there a grace period? Also, is there a maximum to how many times a mayor may be elected.

You know, Hitler never actually killed any competitors until after he got elected to Mayorship.

Instead, kill or intimidate all the competitors' friends. The rest of the drawves will fall into line.

Well, the problem is, with a fortress population, it is impossible to locate the competitors without massive combing - or, as proposed, waiting for them to get elected.

With luck, it'll be a rare enough occurance that it won't cause a tantrum spiral.

Most of the time it's enought to remove all the jobs from your majors labour settings so he has a lot of time on his hands to socialize. Send other candidates to work in the mines where they would be permanently busy, to prevent them from socializing. Should be no need for real killing.

Once they get started, they never really stop. Captain Ironblood of Nist Akath has gone unchallenged for 36 years.

The mayor of my fort, Zuglar the Obese, has run unopposed for 10 years.
I named him so because he has no labours on, he is legendary in most of his social skills, and all the engravings of him show him stuffing his face.

My expedition leader was mayor for about 10 years until a particularly bloody siege killed a large number of dwarves. The second mayor was an ex-military (lung injury) baby factory and remained elected for around 5 years before she went stark raving mad due to a military friend dying in a siege.  Third mayor is a son of the second mayor.

So it's pretty stable, barring unfortunate circumstances.

Make sure he has lots of free time to socialize, so he'll have lots of social skills when the election comes. And before other nobles start arriving, all the liasons meet with the broker, which both uses and increases some negotiation-type skills, so making him that too would be a good idea.
