Eventually we won't be able to use doors for this. (though I suppose when he fixes that he may as well add more flow control hardware at the same time)

the question would then be: are doors fast enough for this?

if yes, why not just speed floodgates up?

Doors don't have a delay at all, I think.

Floodgates are slow for game balance reasons - doors really aren't supposed to be usable for this. But if floodgates could still be slow but react properly to signals received while delayed, that'd fix it i think
