What will they make an MMO from next?
« on: June 09, 2009, 02:51:08 pm »

Seems Atari is hard up on cash. D&D Online is going free to play later this summer and in it's place in 2011? http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/2879084/NWN-Online-in-2011.html#2879084

Hmmm. Not sure what to think. Hopefully Atari doesn't drag poor Cryptic under with  them after the aquisition.

Alas, poor Cryptic. I knew thee well.

Neverwinter Nights... Online? I didn't know Atari had a Department of Redundancy. Department.

It won't be nearly as cool, if people can't make their own content. Why even bother?

Yeah I am surprised this isn't catching on that fast. I mean Ultima Online had a fairly weak form of customisation in the form of Color and jewelry combinations. 10 years later there are still MMOs comming out with even less customisation then Ultima Online.

Honestly no MMO should come out without an extensive character customisation system at this point.

Why? I would rather more effort be put into the actual game, rather than trying to make my avatar look pretty.

Because it translates into the game and prevents the bottleneck of clones.

That and it isn't THAT difficult.

Eh, LOL...and yet again....the same, good old WoW related sentence appears!  ;D

"Once it’s finished, though, things get even harder, as the “Neverwinter Nights” MMO will face some stiff competition.

“World of Warcraft” holds the dominant position in the MMO genre by a country mile, with over 10 million subscribers. The MMO graveyard is filled with titles that have tried to go up against it (see “The Matrix Online,” “Tabula Rasa,” etc.)"

World of Warcraft has the unfortunate status of being too popular.

It isn't that it is bad, there is no way I dare to argue that it is a bad game anymore other then to say that it could use its subscription money better, but that it was practically outdated when it came out and is definately outdated now and is causing MMORPGs that come out to be forced to conform to the standards of World of Warcraft or be blasted into obscurity thus preventing an improvement in MMOs to occur.

So I don't really expect Neverwinter knights or Knights of the Old Republic to be any good due to the World of Warcraft influence.
