We must be able to write on everything.

"Huh, there appears to be writing on this spiked ball. 'go away, ye skinny bastards!' 'Ey, they made a crack at our girth!"
 "Kill de Dwarves!"

True awesomeness, however, will come when the program can place sensationally appropriate pictures and text. Taunts to the goblins and pictures of them dying horribly along the walls of your trap-strewn corridor, unasked for graffiti of dwarves vomiting on the walls of your kitchen, the universe's most disturbing mural on the site of some tentacle demon hanky-panky... complete with profane captions. And to put the right stuff in the right places reliably.

It will be a while though. A long while.

I'd happily settle for the ability to manually select the subject to engrave from fairly broad categories like 'Fortress History', 'Mythology', 'Nature' etc. A system for doing notable fortress events in chronological order would also be nice, particularly if it could be set to automatically update; imagine having the election of each new mayor, the creation of each new artefact, every siege recorded on the walls of the Great Hall or the mausoleum as they take place.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

complete with profane captions.

If we're going to have captions, it won't be long before we have Dwarven-style lolcats:

Just think of what might happen when you try to sell some of those:

Urist Mcmugmaker: "Is everything alright?"
Elf Trader: "well, there is this mug..."
Urist Mcmugmaker: "ya, arn't they great?"
Elf Traders "There's a picture. Of a dwarf. Cutting down a tree"
Urist: "...oops?"

Best idea ever. We could use notes but it wouldn't be the same.

Engraving topic control would be enough for me, IMO. It'd be even better if someone found a way to make riddles out of them, I.E. pictures of dwarves with things and different reactions, and levers with different pictures by them.

But being able to actually engrave words would allow one to leave notes and dire warnings for adventurers.

This conversation reminds me of the engraver who was terrified of flies and, according to his personality file, a very nervous person who was easily startled.  When I assigned him to engrave his own bedroom, he engraved it with images of flies, corpses, dwarves being struck down, and (right by his bed) an image of a tentacle demon.

I digress, of course.  I would enjoy topic control.  Being able to designate a 'historical gallery' would be quite nice.  It fits right in with the 'museum' concept I believe I suggested elsewhere.
