[38c] Nemesis Unit Load Failed error
« on: March 08, 2008, 06:26:00 am »

A cool sounding error, but it seems to have killed my fortress.

I've gone back to an old save and taken the fortress to just before the point when the error hits... within 30 seconds or so of starting this save:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UEOSVAU0

a "FATAL ERROR" window pops up saying "Nemesis Unit Load Failed". Dwarf Fortress then hangs for a while and eventually returns to the desktop.

Is there anything I can do to fix this, or will I have to start over?

This has also been happening to me, with two different worlds. One of them is in DF mode, and crashes a minute or two after my current save, with the aforementioned message.

The other is neutral (I had a fortress in it, but backed it up and abandoned it so I could wander around in adventurer mode). When I try to start a game in that one (as an adventurer - I haven't tried starting a new fortress there, I think), it immediately crashes once I finish designating name and gender and all that, with the same message.

Very annoying. I don't have a filesharing-website account right now, but if you need more saves to confirm the OP's report, I can host one or both of my problem saves.

Thanks!

You only have three unit files in your save folder -- there should be dozens of them.  I don't know where the other ones went, and it'll be difficult to figure out.

Thank you - I've checked my seasonal backups, found one from weeks ago that has the additional files, and copied them into my region folder. Seems to be working so far, fingers crossed...

...!

That explains one of my crashes (where I just copied the save so I could start as an adventurer on it, without copying the units), but it doesn't explain the other. Suppose it's time for me to reconfirm and upload.

...and now I can't replicate the crash.

Probably for the best.

On the plus side, while I was waiting for the crash to reoccur, my dwarves produced "Absamalath Nonshutkirarmiroth, Searchbolted the Bewitched Righteous Denominati". an artifact with a name too long to be displayed.

So all's well that ends well. Hooray!

I do believe I can replicate the crash.

Create a world.
Start a fortress.
Abandon fortress.
Remove savefiles except world.
Start new fortress.
Crash at first caravan.
(Haven't confirmed this 100%, but that's the sequence which lead me into the "Nemesis" crash")

Fixx:
- Backup "region1" (just in case)
- Copy previous fortress-saves into "region1"
  (without overwriting)
- Continue playing and the caravan which probably was the cause of the crash, now enters successfully.

I believe Toady is already fully aware of all this. See the following quote from another thread regarding the "Nemesis Unit Load Failed" error:

Could it be a diplomat coming with a caravan or something?  In any case, this generally means the relevant unit file is either missing or corrupt.  Not much I can do about it, and it's hard to catch the root cause of it.

Yeah, the trick here is not to replicate the crash itself but the corruption that leads to it.
