Archeologists!
« on: October 19, 2008, 05:12:36 am »

We have abandoned sites, but what about foundations and ruins of buildings that are left underground? Using the ledgends you could locate an old site, find nothing but fields, then organise an expedition with a handful of archeologists to find out as much as possible till you run out of supplies and have to leave. You'd have to be able to choose to dig either quickly or carefully depending if you were at the top or starting to find things. It would be a new way to get the world's history filled out. Although, it would be much rarer if play started before year 300.

More intricate ruins - such as finding entire buried structures, using algorithms similar to those that place mineral veins - would be pretty awesome.

Of course, we would need to be able to equip the archeologists with whips. There can be no other way.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..
