Dwarf in a cage just won't DIE.
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:56:34 pm »

So, an ambush on my latest fortress leaves me with an enemy dwarf, who ran into a cage trap.

I try setting him free so my military can shoot him. Nope. The hauler just grabs another cage and stuffs the dwarf in there instead.

I try sticking him on top of a wall and bringing said wall down. Nope. The cage STAYS UP THERE.

I try bringing him ten z-levels up, putting him on the end of a bunch of floor tiles, and then removing the supporting part of said bunch of floor tiles.

Ten z-levels of smoke later, my craftsdwarf topples off the top of the tower and dies horribly...

And the invader dwarf is just sitting there in the middle of the carnage in his happy little cage, completely unhurt.

... Wow.

Have you tried magma or a pit zone?

No magma on the current map.

The dwarf does not show up in the list of creatures to be moved. At all. I can't move him from cages to pits or even from cages to other cages.

Build the cage.  Build a lever.  Link the lever to the cage.  Pull the lever.

Do this in the middle of your dining room for extra fun.

I'll try that.

Edit: It worked! The dwarf is now dead, and Benoit gets a cookie.

... What the hell. The dwarf has been given a GRAVE. Even though he was an ENEMY.I'm posting this as a bug.

It's not a bug!  It's a heartwarming acknowledgement that a dwarf is always a dwarf no matter what happens.

Creatures in cages are transported to an alternate dimension. They need neither food nor drink nor sleep. They don't come to any harm while caged. If the cage is destroyed the portal to the real world is destroyed right along with it, and the creature is trapped in that alternate dimension forever.

Actually, caged dwarves still need food. I know, because in my experiments with trading them some starved to death while awaiting the caravan.

This is not true at all. The things ive found that dont die in cages are domestic animals, creatures from sieges, troglodytes, sasquatches, and unnatural creatures (fire imps, iron men, etc). All of my rat/bat/antmen die, as well as naked mole dogs, giant/large rats and moles.

Enemies in cages don't need food or sleep.  Friendly dwarfs in cages do.
AFAIK nothing in cages suffers any ill effects from wounds (like, say, bleeding to death), but I couldn't swear to it.  Enemies certainly don't seem to, friendlies might.

Corpses don't rot in cages, though.

Had a friendly dwarf go melancholy and die while locked up, but the corpse is still in the cage.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

I once captured a pair of berserk elves.  I tried trading them to the humans, but people brought the cage to the depot without the elves.  Fun times followed     :D

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Cages are like the Genesis Ark. They can literally put millions of creatures in one cage. Dragons, Elephants, Colossi, kittens... They all fit in the same cage.
