I have a fort with no trade, no immigration, no magma (that I know of), two large goblin civilizations, I'm surrounded on three sides by every fish except carp, and the fourth side I dug a ditch and accidentally had my start miner drop a tree on him/herself in the summer of the first year.  There is a two-layer aquifer at the site.  I embarked with "play now." [EDIT: forgot to mention my carpenter got mauled by an alligator and spent the first two years recuperating in bed]

It's pretty cosy.
