Mega Project via Intentional Destruction

I've come up with the idea of a massive project that has some sweet RP potential.

The map you would embark on must have a water source, such as a brook or river.  Or, for extra challenge, make the water source an aquifer.  Or both.

First, you send an embark team with seven picks, all seven dwarves miners, and using the rest of the points *only* for food and drink.

Then, have the dwarves work to dig out a massive fortress complex, build the buildings you want, but don't do anything to specifically encourage immigration, trade, sieges, thieves, etc.

No decorating (smoothing, engraving, statues, etc.).

Once the entire fortress is dug out, or when food and drink is about to run out, route your water source to flood the entire fortress.  Bonus points if you can manage to drown all seven of your dwarves in the process.

Whether or not you manage to kill all of your dwarves, abandon.

Reclaim the site, and don't allow your reclaim forces to dig out a new fortress.  Instead, have them set up some sort of pump operation to drain the top level of the currently existing fortress.  Have them settle within that, and rig a system to drain each successive level when you can.

Thus, you can pretend that your dwarves settled in a massive, flooded cave system, using an elaborate pump system to clear the flooded levels, one by one.

BONUS POINTS:  Make it so that if the pump system is ever interrupted, the entire fortress will flood over again.  AKA keep the water input going, don't block it off, and label the lowest level as off-limits or something.

Basically, redirecting the river (With a 5 z-level drop) into an open hole in the wall.

Not to hard.

I'm not saying that the initial flooding will be hard, but if you set it up so you have a totally flooded 20 z-level fortress, and no pre-made pumping setup (or the rooms/channels for them to go in), that's what will be the challenge.  Also, I forgot to mention, don't let your reclaim force have any picks or anvils, so they have to work only with wood and such until they can trade for picks or the stuff with which to make them (stone, anvils, and metal).

that sounds well above my competency level. also, it won't really flood the whole thing if it's an aquafier.

It will if the aquifer is the topmost layer.  Besides, the aquifer adds the challenge of building the place to begin with, since the ideal pattern for this wouldn't allow for the initial group to build pumps or anything to bypass the aquifers.

Hehe, I don't think I want to take a shot at this either - I was just rambling, and posted because I was already logged on and all....

Maybe, though.  Maybe my next fortress.

see, the aqufier is not in the running for being on the top, at least as far as i know.

If you mean that you don't think that an aquifer can be placed as the topmost layer of an area, that's not true.  I've intentionally embarked on several spots like that in the past, for a challenge.

It's not too common, but it does happen.

Well, technically, I believe it's the dev's intent to make sure that doesn't happen. If you wanted a simple go of things, you could just start the fort under the aquifer line of wherever you happen to embark. I'd recommend the river, though. What's worse than a flooded fort? A fort invaded by CARP. ZOMBIE CARP.

A flooded fortress full of zombie carp, and zombie whales invading from the ocean, while a large Goblin Tower looms to the south, full of zombie goblins.

And make sure that the HFS is revealed before the original team dies.  Demons are a *must* in this hellhole.

demons, unless they are frog demons, don't seem to mix with water very well.

Find a way to keep the HFS area from flooding, then.  Doors can be excused as being made by the demons or something in the story for the reclaim group.
