Dwarves swim in 4/7. Simple as that. Once they gain swimming skill, they can swim in 7/7. Draft them in a 4/7 room and wait. You then got a fort full o' swimmers.

Or maybe a mechanic, if given enough time to prepare.

I wish it was that simple. For one thing, 7/7 water underground will cause dwarves to drown from lack of air, and even professional
swimmers regard 4/7 or higher dangerous terrain, at least with a roof over their heads. For another thing,
4/7 to 7/7 is identical except for the aforementioned lack of air thing. Believe me, I've tested with both adv. and dwarf mode.
With no roof though, I believe it is a different story...

By no roof, do you mean an open space above the water, or actual aboveground light?

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Well, I did some more testing, and I found that dwarves with "swimmer" skill won't go into 4/7 water outside if they are stationed in it.
I am bemused by the reports of dwarves swimming through hallways filled with water without canceling their tasks.
Perhaps an open pool underground is the trick.

Issue 2 is power; I was under the impression that power could only be connected to the back square of the pump, not the front. Wait... *checks wiki... finds pictures that indicate...* Ugh. How the pumps relate to power is less than clear.

Using dwarf-power, yes you can only power them from the back. Using mechanics, you can power a pump from any non-diagonal border square. Sides, front, or back. You can also power a pump from below (make sure you channel a hole underneath before building the pump) or from above (again, channel before building the gear/axle)

The only exception to the above is a pump that is taking pressurized-water as input. If you are pumping water that is at the same level as the pump, you can only power it mechanically from above or below, and ONLY above or below the tile that is marked as impassible to dwarves. The output-end of the pump, in other words. Other places will work, but will leak pressurized water. Bad idea.

Issue 1 is that screw pumps need at least 4 spaces in a line to function; one for the hole to pump from, one for the operator square, one for the block of the pump, and one for the output.

Issue 2 is power; I was under the impression that power could only be connected to the back square of the pump, not the front. Wait... *checks wiki... finds pictures that indicate...* Ugh. How the pumps relate to power is less than clear.

Yup.  Gulty as charged.  The pumps aren't aligned properly, and the arse end of the upper pair is covering the channel down to the lower pair.  (Also as I said, there should be another pair on an even lower level.)

However vertical stacks of pumps work fine, reversing direction on each level and keeping the front segment lined up with the ones above and below - it's just my rendition of 'em is a bit screwy.  (I really shouldn't post in the wee hours of the morning after a long, long, session...   ;) )

I've built the thing often enough...  who'd think that ASCII would be so tricksy?
