FYI, cave exploring is called spelunking.
Cavers sneer at spelunkers, who typically show up with only a flashlight, no helmet, the wrong kind of clothing, and sometimes do obnoxious things like killing the denizens of the cave.

...

OK, yeah, cave exploring in DF is called spelunking.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Yet oddly enough likely to still be using rope in some way.

On the subject of ropes, does anyone else know that if a creature is chained or tethered while the restraint is being deconstructed, that creature will be wearing the rope or chain?  It seems appropriate for this kind of thing.  Deconstruct the chains of criminals and use them for spelunking expeditions.
