All the tiles under the town were displayed as blue sky and marked as outside, light, open space. Area outside town was correctly black. Designating area for digging turned the area black, and exposed the rock in a large grid, and did this for every level above the dig-designated level.

Running v0.28.181.40d on Ubuntu linux. Not using any third party utilities. The game files have not been modded, exept for a few init options.

I have the save file from after I dig-designated the whole bottom layer, should you need it. The sky tiles are gone, but you can still see the grid of revealed ground.

Can you duplicate it from a seed?

It sounds just like what happened to me once.  Did it look anything like this?

Probably some kind of corrupted data, Toady thought plants but maybe other tile properties as well.

No, everything was blue. The whole world from level two downwards, exept for the three world map tiles outside the human town.

I'll try to regenerate the world and see if it reproduces, but I've been messing around in adventure mode quite a lot so it might not work. Indeed, there's a dead elf in one of the buildings who I am pretty sure used to be me. Forgot to mention it in the original post. Could it have something to do with this?

EDIT
The world generation parameters produced a different world. The geography is similar, but the distribution of good/evil regions is different, as are sites. I'm guessing the world was generated on an older version. Is there any way to find out which one, exept trying them all?

If you export local images, in the [fortname]-param-region#-etc.txt it will tell you what version you used, and also any changes you may have made to the generation parameters.
