I just discovered something interesting recently.

I was looking at a bunch of engravings that were recently revealed by the removal of the stone that was blocking them. One of them was of the mortal wounding of a goblin by the dwarf Dopey Jr. What is interesting about it was that Dopey Jr. would have been 5 years old at the time. Dopey Jr. is actually the namesake of the first and for a long time the only defender of Greedgates, who died recently. She carried her daughter and namesake into many a battle, and apparently something rubbed off. The crazy thing is I never saw this happen, the only evidence is the engraving and a single goblin being listed under Dopey Jr's kills (Dopey Jr. is still a child, although she should become a peasent in about 2 years). I'm trying to figure out just exactly how a 5-year-old managed this.

You get any dwarf into combat and they'll fight, and sometimes they get lucky (or the goblin in question was already mostly killed by the kid's mom). Dwarven children, to my knowledge, have identical base stats as dwarven adults, which basically means they suck at unarmed combat but will, eventually kill their target if it's helpless.

Maybe she grabbed the goblin by the throat and strangled him to death. That would also explain why it says "mortal wounding" as opposed to "striking down" or something like that. Strangling is also much easier when the target is unconscious, so she probably was finishing off the enemy of her mother like Derakon said.

Whatever the reason, you can bet Dopey Jr. will take her mother's place as fortress champion once she's old enough to pick up a crossbow.

I should start capturing goblins and dropping them 3 or so levels into my dining room to see if any of the loiterers will rack up some kills.  I want my own hardened dwarven children.

Yeah, kids in DF are no joke. One of my very first experiences with the game was in adventure mode, and carefully reading combat spam while my @ wandered aimlessly in the tavern, I read "Human Child punches Elk in the Upper Body! It Explodes into gore!" followed by "Human child punches Elk in the lower body, It is MANGLED"

Jesus, I dunno what they fed that kid, but he was tearing apart Elk with his bare hands. Makes me think of the Doom Comic.
