I set up a farming operation next to an underground river.

The farming operation is working fine, and as what I thought to be an added bonus there were lots of cave spiders running around near the river.

PROBLEM:

Cats are killing the cave spiders and not picking up after themselves.  This generates (a lot of) cave spider corpses.  This is doing two things:

Massive miasma in/around my farming operation.

Excessive hauling jobs (kind of like when I first started playing and I hauled all of my stone outside.  Except maybe worse.)

Suggestions for least unhappiness/most efficient solution for this problem?

Cage the damn cat.

If the cats are pets and thus can't be caged, then put doors over the entrances to the river area.  Forbid pets to open these doors.  Occasionally a cat might still slip in with a dwarf, though.

Alternately, designate a little area near the river as a refuse stockpile, and dig out the ceiling above it.  This will make the stockpile be considered 'outside' and no miasma will be generated from it.  If you're worried about goblins shooting down into the hole, build a wall around it.

Ultimate solution:  Butcher all cats.  Move the farming facility away from the river.
