My first fall traders aren't coming.
« on: October 02, 2008, 09:27:39 pm »

This has happened on my last three worlds.  The first i investigated, and there turned out to be 1 elf civ and Kobolds basically ruling the world.

The other two worlds though, they just never came.  I've set the worldgen to force civs to survive, and even walked through an active dwarf city in adventure mode, but they never come.  I did embark some distance away from the civs, but I'm not on an island or anything.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I want to get this HFS uncovered, my volcano, chasm, and pit all capped, but I am a bit apprehensive about the time it would take to breed enough dwarves to feel confidant if immigrants aren't coming.

Do you have a trade depot?

Before embarking, hit tab a few times; among other things, you'll get to see what civs have access to your location and whether or not you can trade with them.

I made a map once where I had access to humans, dwarves, and goblins, but all three had "No trade"...never did embark there, but I'm a bit curious what would've happened.

I got some mixed symbols, i think.  What's the 'no trade' thing look like?

Edit: Yes, have trade depot.  I am also only two world tiles from what I take to be my capital.  I also have decent access from my flatland portion, which is the bionom I started on.

My civ screen is blank though on the most recent one.  I turned off reveal all legends, thinking I could learn them slowly, or some such.

I've got a game going on that has this problem.  It's in an awesome location so far.  'Calm' rocky wasteland that's lifeless except for camels, fish, and a few pest species.  (No carp!)  Several layers of obsidian, a nice brook nearby, a magma vent, flux stone farther down.  At least supposedly there will be flux, though I haven't gotten through the obsidian yet.

Outpost Failtones is absurdly rich, with masterwork engravings over nearly every surface.  My dwarves have their legendary dining room.  They all have individual rooms like personal palaces.  We have a skilled cook making awesome food.  There's no dangers here and all the luxuries a dwarf could want.  Life is good for The Paddles of Allegiance.

There's only one fly in the ointment.  No immigrants.  Not even any traders.  For that matter, I'm not getting kobolds or goblins either.  I'm not on an island.

Is it because my calm wasteland is a 2x2 area I discovered hiding in a terrifying wasteland?  I couldn't shift that 2x2 area at all without getting a bit of terrifying going on.

Is there anything I can do to attract traders/migrants?  If not, is it appropriate to abandon the fort?  I mean it is, after it's fashion, still quite lively.  If it isn't abandoned, it could probably run with minimal supervision for an arbitrary length of time.

Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the blood god, for it is a dwarven number.  It's number is five-hundred and eighty nine.
