The Spartans in 300 were so much more fun than the serious real ones. I say base it on them. Heh, give them all a bronze helmet, a spear, greaves. Plate mail is debatable, some of them did wear it, but none of the statues or pictures depicted them wearing it.

Also, Spartans did treat their women right. The real ones at least.
