so...CIV_CONTROLLABLE
« on: September 25, 2008, 05:04:24 pm »

suppose I added [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] to the human or elf entity files.
Now, what exactly would happen? I've heard a lot of things about this...everything from pressing 'a' to choose my civilization when I enter fortress mode to the game crashing.
What exactly does happen if I have more then one entity with the [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag in it?

The game will randomly pick a race with [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] for you when you embark in fortress mode.

That's why it's advised to only have one with the tag at a time.

It's what tests and the wiki say as far as I know, unless Toady's changed it recently. I could be outdated, but I'm pretty sure. :P

It's NOT random. You can choose your race/civ from one of the screens when embarking.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Ahh, so I guess it's from tabbing through the civs screen on embark?

That's news to me, gotta edit that then.

Another question:
How do I get a civ to start with more points? Or is this hard coded?

When you switch through the civs on the civ screen in embark you'll get a good idea of which civ you can play when the symbols change. I highly suggest adding picks and axes to the civ you want to play, however, unless you really like never being able to actually chop down trees or dig anything.

As for the last bit, there are various memory-hacking utilities that let you change the amount of points you start with, such as dtil.

Humans are actually petty usable with only [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] tacked on. Just remember to set all woodcutters to have 2 weapons in their soldiery/hunting equipment options since they'll most likely try to use great axes or halberds (which really need to use polearm skill instead of axe skill...).

Same deal for your military guys if you want to use any 2-handed weapons.

Ha, you think THAT'S bad!
Try playing as the koboods!
They can't do squat!
Make certain you play as a civilization that has the [INTELLEGENT] tag, or things get really messed up.
As far as axes and picks go, you can wait till humans come and trade for those, if you absolutely have no choice.
HOWEVER, your citizens can only take up jobs that are listed in their part of the file.  So, those Elves can't do much.  Humans are fine.  Currently, Goblins should also be fine.
If you want to have lots of fun playing as different civilizations, I suggest getting one of the mods with many civilizations in it.
