Mandates and justice as suitable subject for engraving.
« on: October 14, 2008, 04:13:36 pm »

I reckon that the various things surrounding a noble mandate could make good engravings:

1)  A noble mandates such and such.

2)  When a dwarf creates the required item, and the item made is a masterwork, a record is kept.  If an engraving is made of this item - which already happens at present - an additional line is added saying that the item was "made at the behest of Lordy Lordster".

Or

3)  The mandate is not met.  The dwarf's confinement or beating then becomes a fit subject for an engraving.  "The dwarf is confined.  This relates to the imprisonment of Hapless Dwarf in 234 for failure to meet the mandate for Thingummies as requested by Lordy Lordster."

I couldn't find any mention of this in the bloats so hopefully I'm not committing a dreadful faux pas.  :)

Engravings need to stop repeating, first, so we can get a diverse set of NOT founding-in-the-year-X engravings without savescumming ad infinitum.

I'm fine with the suggestion, but especially seconding that the importance factor of the founding/selection of the first leader needs to go down quite a ways.  I wouldn't mind them being repeated every so often, but when I get an entire wall filled with what is essentially the same event it starts to get a bit grating.  My best hammerdwarf just went down in a blaze of glory, can I get a few engravings of her now instead of the billionth engraving of Unib Spearracks ascending to the leadership of the Sacrificial Chamber in early spring of 407?

About option 3, I think that it would be nice if it was noted how much of the raw goods for making mandated items was on hand.  That, along with mentioning the public reaction or craftdwarf personality could allow players viewing Legends to decide if the mandate was justified.

Being able to choose what gets engraved would be nice

Mandates as is are pointless so turning them engravable wouldn't be interesting and would probably fill your fort with the power of the sheer quantity of them

Engravings of people getting hammered for failing would be more interesting

Historically there are plenty of walls full of lineage, trade and legal records. Hammurabi's Code was inscribed on a pillar. Maybe by setting would be nice if you're engraving a throne room (victories) or prison office (crimes and punishments) or whatever (cheese). Or a sequence...
This is an engraving of dwarves and dwarves.
The dwarves are with the dwarves.
The dwarves are laboring.
The dwarves are still laboring.
The dwarves are on break.
The dwarves are laboring again.
The dwarves are pulling off the dwarves' heads because Generic McPlayer didn't want to engrave the dining room until he hit Legendary+5.

I just want an option to leave full random on. The whole boatmurdered cheese thing rocked. :)

Yeah, I'm 100% against being able to pick specific engravings, but I would love a little context sensitivity for defined rooms.

Also, I also like any idea involving more types of engravings (including the OPs).

Could something like the menacing with spikes code work here?  Different races are more likely to prefer different sorts of engravings?

Finally, I'm all about reducing the probability of an engraving repeating, especially in a certain (say 5x5x5) area.

How about something like the SYM tags. We could tag suitable subjects for engravings.

Absolutely agree. Any room assigned to a particular dwarf should have a greatly increased chance of being engraved with stuff commemorating things the dwarf in question had done, for example.
