The adventure pen of appraising?

  In school earlier today I was twirling a pen around and of course thinking of dwarf fortress.  In this period of less than fully active cognitive abilities an idea was born.  In this thread http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=25746.0 I read about a pen that would, as you stabbed foes, train your appraising level.  This combined with the incessant chore of guessing how much that stack of +Iron Arrows+ cost came up with a solution!
  If it's possible to make this kind of pen, and it's possible for a dwarf to see prices at novice appraising level... why can't an adventurer be able to determine an item's value by not of weight but by it's actual value.  Learning a skill to help in negotiating by stabbing others in the back with a pen ;D.  I just don't know how to make this pen available to the average adventuring party.  Would it be sold in shops or would it have to be found in a fortress?  Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance ;D.

I doubt that feather quill pens even exist on DF. And of an adventurer somehow used one to get an appraisal skill, i dont see prices magically appearing in shops.

I know but the linked thread was about how to make weapons gain skill in skills other than the usual skill, like a pick.
  Also, doesn't novice appraising let dwarves in fortress mode see prices at the depot?  Why would it be different for adventure mode?

If you make such a weapon and allow a civ to use it, you should be able to start adventurers from that civ with Novice Appraiser and some actual weapon skill.  I've been planning something like this, but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, so I don't know if it will actually let an adventurer judge values or not.

I did create a butcher's knife, which is sold in shops.  Presumably an Appraiser's Scale or some such would also be available there.

So... theoretically if I added a modified weapon the some civ's entity file, I could just add a skill not normally used by the aforementioned civ... cool ;D.

Hm... I tested the idea out, made some 'Magic Glasses' with my nonexistant knowledge of DF raws. When I made my character, he had two levels of the Apprasial skill, which is the good news. Bad news, it doesn't help with values at all... Ah well, guess it couldn't be expected to.

Still, here's the stuff I put in. It's pretty much modded from the 'Druid Staff' at the other thread.

Awww... I can't believe it didn't work.  Well thanks for testing it, but I have one question... why magic glasses?  I mean how can you choose a pair of, surprisingly devastating glasses instead of a knife pen that doubles as a blowgun ;D.
