Crazy Construction Idea (is this possible?)
« on: October 06, 2008, 03:38:37 pm »

So, I've been thinking about it, and you can move water up levels with pumps, build powered assemblies, and obviously build towers.

So, can floors be muddied?  Constructed ones.  Because if so, I'm sorely tempted to build a huge gear assembly for pumping water up to the top floor of a tower and build a farm on the top, open floor of some tower somewhere.

AFAIK, entirely possible. There's only one way to find out, though...

Of course, we all know the best way to figure something out in DF is to try it and have fun.

Very well!  Might take me a while (the river's a bit far away and my tower's only 2 floors high just yet, I just started this fort) but I shall see!  And if it works I'll let everyone know in case they, too, want to try to build some sort of ridiculous fort with strawberries and such coming off the top.

Constructions can be muddied, I believe, but they can't grow plants from what I've heard. (Read: read)

Having recently constructed a fort with a reservoir at the top of a constructed tower, I can safely say that damp floors are listed as Muddy. Whether you can grow things in them, I don't know.

A quick test on one of my existing forts reveals that you can, in fact, build farms on muddied constructions.

So yeah, sky farms ahoy!

ONWARD AND UPWARD, DORFS!  WE SHALL FARM IN THE SKY.

PS:  I imagine for resevoir-filling you'd want a perpetual-motion watertower?

Wait, you can actually farm on constructed floors? What do you know.

But we're talking about plants that grow without any sunlight at all here ;)

I mean when you have plants that can grow underground without even being water once, then a farm in the sky with wet granite blocks for soil isn't that suprising.

You might be able to build a farm plot but can you actually PLANT anything?  I think constructions have biome issues and that's where they'd show up.

I've done this.  3Dwarf doesn't give you a good idea, but the middle segment left (and the mirrored section in back) plus the two water-filled segments at the top all got turned into farms.
