meeting zones work just as well, without the side effect of parties.

Personally I just give each dwarf a separate room and make them sit in there, alone, when there is no work to be done. Who needs friends or lovers anyway? A nice side effect is because no-one knows any other dwarf, other then the starting 7, no-one cares if random dwarves end up dead for whatever reason which is great because I usually don't care either.

... that's not a good thing. Friends give you happy thoughts! Also comfort them when they get injured.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

and the roman parties were awesome.
i liked them much too, haven't drinked so much since thausands of years ...
...ah sweet nostalgia. I'm glad there are people who still remember and cherish the good ol'times. It all went good until those party-crashing Vandals came. I mean that was, like, real vandalism or what?
