I was thinking how i might design the black gate from the movie lotr 3 and the hardest thing i've had to imagine was the opening gate itself. The walkways to the side of it would be 5 or 6 spaces wide with fortifications and it would all be at least 10 z levels tall. The only thing i could imagine for the gate itself would be multiple bridges for each z level, 2 on both sides, that open horizontally to the outside.

I wanted to hear if anyone else had been thinking of doing something like this or if anyone has any advice or ideas to add on?

No advice, but if you can manage to get trolls on top of it, you will truly win.

Thats possible but only under circumstances allowing goblins to bring them, or with a chasm that has some, which would be difficult to guarantee. Trolls get caged like everyone else right? I only ask because they're the only thing goblins bring that will actually break doors and floodgates down so i wasn't sure what else they'd be capable of. Also, does anyone know what prompts goblins to start bringing trolls?

I think it depends on the strength and numbers of their civ. Since everyone is at war with goblins, you'll be hard pressed to find any with trolls by the end of world gen.

Trolls and beak dogs can be brought by any goblin faction, though most goblin factions don't have them.

Generally its pure luck as to getting trolls or beak dogs.

Good news, the place i started with has a chasm and TWO trolls!
