It's probably an oversight. I've noticed this before looking in the raws, but never really cared :D I always disable clothing in my games anyway by removing it from all entity files, just to reduce clutter.

All clothing items except shoes are valued at 10, and everything in the shoe raw file is valued at 15 (even the armored boots).

Values really should be more balanced. All the clothing type shoes should be worth 5 if all the other clothes are 10, since you get 2. The same as with gloves. Right now producing gloves or mittens gives 2x the value as producing other clothing items, and producing socks or shoes gives 3x.

i wondered about the sock thing too... extra zero? really skews trading, especially if you start adding stuff to them.

"we have, on offer at equal value, these 10 marble thrones of exquisite dwarven design... or this goblin sock that Sigur found in someone's boot. our clothier stitched a cat on it. which would you like?"

i think maybe they use them as sock puppets, since my dwarves always seem to be happy.

Storing lye in barrels is easy, just make a stockpile accepting nothing but lye and make sure it allows barrels. They'll put a barrel in it, and someone will bring the bucket over and dump the lye in.
