[40c] Fire doesn't hurt dwarves
« on: August 26, 2008, 12:35:30 pm »

So I embarked near a magma vent and started developing a system to draw from it all the way to the northeast to my fortress around the central area. Things were going okay, but a miner had a couple dogs that followed him everywhere. They got distracted around the vent and eventually one got his head blown off by a fire imp. Soon I see a couple copies of

Stray puppy (tame) has burnt to death.

No big deal, but then I scroll over and notice that there is a large fire spreading. Shit.

I cancel any jobs leading near the fire, and soon notice that I still left some barrels near the dig site, laying on some grass. Realizing that eventually the fire will reach them, I commanded all my dwarves to take up masonry and get to building a wall around them, since they were full of alcohol. A dwarf managed to put up the final block just as the smoke was overtaking him, which was a pretty awesome thing to watch, but I noticed that nothing was burning other than the grass and puppies.

While fortunate, does this mean fire doesn't hurt my dwarves, or are they just astoundingly lucky to walk through a blaze unscathed? I'm thinking a bug.

Dwarves can certainly burn to death in a fire; my money is on your being lucky.

Also, if your dwarves wear little clothing (or wear non-burning clothing, as would be if it was from adamantium), they are not likely to catch on fire. They will receive heat damage though, but won't actually catch on fire if they don't carry anything flammable or don't spend too much time near the fire.

Just like in adventure mode when you light a fire, you don't get instantly burninated upon lighting it up.

it only hurts real bad when the dwarf himself is on fire, or when anything he's carrying is on fire.
