Picking stuff up
« on: August 17, 2006, 07:44:00 am »

There is probably an obvious answer to this, but I can't find it.

I have a full set of armor and weapons lying around - iron crossbow, chainmail, the works.  (Oddly enough I don't think it came from any of my dwarves because I still have the full count and I'm still in the first year and haven't noticed any immigrants)  How do I pick that stuff up and give it to one of the dwaves?  Also, I built a copper pick, thinking I could have a third miner.  But it's just lying around in the forge.  How do I tell one of the dwarves to pick it up so they can dig?

Armor is put in armor stands and is used my military dwarves when needed. Picks are used automatically by people with the mining labour preference.

Edit: Oh, and you assign armor type to militaries using the weapons option in the military screen. The second last option on the right sets armor type (leather/chain/plate) and the further right one sets shield type.

Make sure that you go to the armor/weapons rack and tell it to enable everything. By default, neither accepts anything (why - I'm not sure, but that's how it is.)

For axes/picks, if you don't have any weapons storage dwarves should just go pick them up when you assign them the mining/wood cutting job.

I've been wondering about this too. I spent precious starting points on some wolf leather armor, assuming that my dwarf with a skill in armor using would start out wearing it, but instead it's still lying on the ground where the wagon used to be and I haven't been able to figure out how to make him wear it.

I think you can tell them to wear armor in [v s] or in the military screen once you select "weapons" or whoever is at the bottom.

Yeah racks/stands start out with no permits, because sometimes people wanted to group weapons and the haul jobs that were created immediately on placement stopped this.  With the addition of weapon/armor piles it won't matter anymore.  Racks/stands are going over to individual soldier/noble assignment I think.

like i said.. you can assign the thing. doesn't necessarily mean they'll wear it. they pick up the right weapons no trouble. don't think i've seen anyone wearing any armor yet.. (aside from default)

shields are different.

guess i should try to have only a bunch of armors (and nothing else to haul!) to see if they wear anything once i turn them into soldiers

I assigned him to wear leather armor, but he still wouldn't use it. I'll try moving it to an armor rack later though, maybe he'll notice it then.

well.. i started with 7 of each iron armors and a lot more shields/bucklers..

all dwarves proficient in armor, 1 in each weapon (+ 1 wrestling) the last one shield..

..... start game, did nothing but change all to have plate armors, the one with shield skills to shields.

activated all of them.

they all went and pick up weapons (no surprise there)... as far as i can see, no one picked up a single piece of armor. whilst the one with shields skill has 10+ shields and a buckler (his job is still set as picking up equipment btw, the others are no jobs)...

lots of left and right hands XD

url to the save file.. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=33BA201D34815524

world generated under .93... played under .100

... obviously cheated to get that kind of starting equipment

-----------
which reminds me.. what happens to unused points in the setup screen?
