I disagree entirely about kobolds being inept...

I hate to break it to you, but you're disagreeing with Adams Bros. there. From what I've seen of the Stories, Kobolds may be a little skilled with throwing poisonous bugs and a few punji-spikes. Other than that, they are intended to explode into gore at the slightest provocation. See Kobold Quest- the pre-DF DF.

This story portrays a reasonably competent kobold: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/story/tt_bride_price.html

Right, its that story where I take to be the end aim of Toady's kobolds. They are clever and unorthodox to make up for their lacking in physical strength or sheer mental capacity. In this way, they are a necessary counterbalance to other races who have more direct advantages. They don't even really breed as fast as the elves do, so they can't even use the same sort of mass wave tactics that normal "inferior" races have to use. They have to be sly and clever to make up their lack in just about every other area, using all of their surroundings and whatever they have at their disposal to their advantage. Kobolds shouldn't be a nuisance, they should be a threat, albeit a different kind of threat than Goblins or Humans or Elves.

Looking over all the stories etc., Guy Montag's description of them as "little fantasy-setting Vietcong" seems spot on, as far as behavior goes anyway.

Well, you can always mod it, I'm just warning you not to hold your breath for Toady One to change his mind.

No worries there, modding what I want is fine with me.  8)

That's one of the nicest things about DF: The modding tools are amazing.

For me, kobolds seem more of a cunning, sly race with voodo magic
