Ah those birds!
« on: November 02, 2007, 09:37:00 am »

Lads, what is the best way to kill those giant birds? 1 bird killed 2 of my dwarves and 1 wardog. I find them very annoying. What can we do against them? Marksdwarves maybe?

Heh.  You think giant eagles are bad?  They've never done more than scare my dwarves for stretches of time.  Skeletal giant eagles, on the other hand, are death incarnate.  They'll kill half your population before your first summer.  No chance to train and arm a military at all.

Yeah it's kinda funny watching the dwarves run and cover in fear before you've gotten a descent start of a cave done  :)

Hey! Anyone else but me that started thinking about cliff-racers from morrowind?

My ranger does a pretty good job keeping the giant eagles down. He's brought in three of them for food.

I have been through three short fortresses with giant eagles and they've *yet* to attack me.  Heck, in the fortress I'm playing now, I sent my dwarves half way across the map to set up shop (food, stone, wood, digging, workshops, etc) in an area that had a giant eagle perched on top of it!  He chased them a way a little but eventually he flew away!

I have seen an increase in mandrill attacks; however, those were just free food for my woodsman recruit.

Giant eagles don't bother me, but I've had a giant bat (not a bird, I know; they named it Lord of Doom!!) kill at least 4 dwarves, and 4-5 others killed by a giant cave swallow (OMG). They wouldn't be so much trouble if dwarves didn't insist on picking up some obscure items dropped by monsters killing each other, and if one dwarf dying didn't trigger a chain reaction of "bring item to stockpile". Too bad it's so hard even finding where the damn dwarf died to forbid the items.

Birds move between levels, so they are very hard to follow around to see what they're about. They are well done though, I can very well imagine the soaring giant eagles...

I have never run into a problem with giant eagles, but raccoons always scare my dwarves away. All seven dwarves dropped what they were doing and ran away when I immediately began my first game in the newest version. My miners had not even dug anything yet. Than the little bastard coon stole food!

If I may  quote one guy who managed to, of all things, get a million coin bounty on him, "Indeed, it was this which taught me that it was possible to get a death sentence. The first time it happened, I slew all the guards in Neen and reloaded. Finding myself in Pelagiad I immediately saw a guard draw his sword and run towards me. Assuming that a fine of 1m gold pieces was such a terrible deed that it had somehow tainted my other savegames, I panicked and fled - fortunately he was actually after the cliff-racer just behind me."

I found that funneh.

If you're interested in the source, just search for IT-HE.org. That site is hilarious

"Compatibility mode", dude. If he tries running it under "capatability mode" some terrible thing involving elder gods will probably happen.

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

A giant bat and a giant cave swallow managed to destroy my first fort in the new version all by themselves. Argh.

Hm havent seen a giant bat so far thankfully.   :D
Anyways, I dunno what happened, but it seems like that this killer giant bird what I had on my map disappeared. I think it zoned out thankfully. My dwarves can go out now and drink from the river, without the risk that they will loose their heads.   :D
