Anyways, nothing.

Cave-ins only occur when an area is free-floating, currently.

With one pillar holding up the rock above it, yes. Cave ins aren't completely out.

Personally, I'm pretending that the 7x7 rule still does apply - spaces that large just don't seem plausible, and eventually cave-ins will be back in.

Yes, the only problem is having enough legendary miners to dig out your 1000x1000x29 room before the next version arrives. XD

I've had my own problem with this - I was making an open-cut mine.  Fine.  all was going well, although I had a few pieces of sand that didn't get excavated for whatever reason (maybe the miner trampled the plants into the sand and he abandoned the channel job).  Anyways, they go down to the 2nd level, I dig that out - "A section of the cavern has collapsed!" OH NOES, my miner!.  Turns out they had a few bruises, a yellow middle finger (maybe it was bent back or something) and a yellow left eye (as you do with lots of flying sand  :p ).  That went good until the sand collapsed again, and again, and again, and again...  Maybe the floating bits were fixing themselves, I dunno :shrug:

When I think of the great cavernous halls of Moria, I think they were bigger than 7x7. Proper dwarves should be able to make grand, huge halls with good engineering.

Before Toady fixed the lag problem, I dug rooms exactly the size of the entire display area, so I'll have a cavernous area that is all at "camera height", so I can be below the default z-level and still run with no lag.

Frostedfire: I had the same thing happen to me, but my miner got yellow lowerback, she's now my sheriff, mostly because she has some mad attitude, like she prefers to intimitate instead of compromising and she enjoys a thrill  :D
