Note that the fountain won't go higher than the water level of the cistern that held it.

So does the water spew out everywhere, leaving a giant mess? Does the height of the water tower (and therefore of the fountain) increase how much gets spilled? How much area should I have grated off if I want to make a 3/5/10 level tall fountain?

Does the length of the U-bend affect the pressure? I assume not, but I'd rather know before I construct a mile-long pipe that makes what was supposed to be a mighty fountain into a bubbling hole.

You should be able to put grates or something around where the water spews out of the ground. As to where that water goes to in the end? You'll have to find a chasm, or pump it somewhere off the edge of the map, or something. This may require creativity.

Currently fountains don't work very well, the best you can make is a hole that water slowly seeps out of. It
doesn't even generate mist.

Pressure's good, but not perfect. No matter how much water is trying to get through how tiny a hole, it won't shoot straight up in the air. Instead, it will (very quickly) rush out to fill one z level at a time with 7s of water.
So true fountains are impossible, you can just make unexpected drowning chambers.

Wait, is the U-Bend Bug fixed now?  I tried a fountain once and flooded everything, haven't tried since.  I must not have been paying enough attention to the devlogs or something...

Hmmm, I've got an idea for a huge fountain that shoots waterfalls into channels leading into the main water feed for the fountain for four(One in each direction pumps can go in) waterfalls... too complicated to put in
