What do you do when your first caravan and liaison gets chased/bumped off by goblins before they even reach your fort?

I'm currently in the fourth year of my fort and locked at 36 dwarfs because the reports about my fort's value apparently aren't getting out since no caravans are coming in.  Fort value is over 300000 now, and only 7 dwarfs have ever died here, including the caravan that got wiped out.

Will I have to rely on my own dwarfs breeding for the rest of my fort's history?

You'll get another caravan. I've heard different things about the liaison coming back though. In my experience, I always get another liaison after a few years. My game is usually running really fast, so I guess it's just a matter of patience.
