Best way to ditch companions?
« on: July 12, 2008, 01:41:37 pm »

Hey everyone!

I just recently fought a hydra alongside of 4 drunks that I had recruited from various villages. I actually had grown quite attached to the drunks; these four had survived many wolf, predatory cat and semi-megabeast battles. I was hoping that advance to wrestlers soon . . . we had many strangle-fests with cyclops and whatnot. On that note, it surprised me that five people strangling a helpless victim is no more effective than one.

Anyways, we came to the site of the cave -- and I was really hoping that they'd the hydra would make a quick appearance -- I hadn't been able to find the last megabeast I was sent to kill. After about ten steps toward the entrance of the cave, I get messages about my drunks getting attacked by the hydra. We're still on the surface.

I head toward where the drunks had been following me, and after about four steps I get some typical combat spamming, only that its all about my companions getting ripped apart and their body parts getting spat out. Then I see two corpses and a hydra standing among them.

I throw some mud at the thing and bruise it a little. Then I start the evasive maneuvers for about 10 turns. At the bottom of the screen come the other two drunks charging towards the hydra with naive bravery. If I could scream, I would have been saying: "RUN YOU FOOLS!" Kind of like Gandalf in LotR after fighting the balrog, except that I'm just a dude getting chased by a hydra throwing mud at its face. Not a super awesome wizard.

The drunks don't heed my telepathic warning and charge in. They promptly get their arms and legs ripped off, but they distract the beast long enough for me to recover from an unsuccessful charge, and charge again -- this time successfully. The one drunk bleeds to death, the other one is unconscious, but stable, if you don't count the missing leg.

I promptly begin to strangle no less than 2 of the hydra's heads. It passes out and the rest you can guess.

You strangle the hydra.
You strangle the hydra.
You strangle the hydra.
You strangle the hydra.
You strangle the hydra.
.
.
.

My question is this: now I am left with a very lame drunk who is missing a leg and who passes out all the time. What is the best to ditch her? I know I can leave when she is unconscious and she'll stop following me, and I know I'll lose my companions if I retire. I just don't want her to vanish into oblivion -- she was quite the effective meatshield. If I retire, can I start a new game with the character I retire? If I leave her when she is unconscious, will she vanish into thin air?

Thanks for any insight!

I could always stab her in the head, and then just avoid her home civ.

Drown them, maybe?

Or potentially knock them into a chasm/magma?

All you need to do is find a sufficiently walled in area and then a monster or two to harrass them.

Lol. The point was so that she would still alive. I decided to ditch her by leaving the town as soon as she blacked out. So she's still alive . . . somewhere.

In my experience, ditching unconcious people in a safe place turns them into one-man migration groups that wander around and probably settle somewhere eventually.

Sorry for BUMPING! such an old topic.

If you are ever serious about ditching old companions, than the best method to do so would be to go to haunted/terrifying spot. Than after that just walk around untill you get attacked, again, and again, and again. Hopefully by the time your done, well actually all of your companions will be dead after half a day.

Just make sure you have the speed to get away. Undead are fairly easy to run from. Note to show the effectiveness of this I ventured into a haunted river with ten companions, none returned, except for me of course.  ;D

Or just take a little swim in the ocean or along a river... they can't follow, and if you go far enough, you'll loose them when you come back on land and you resume traveling. Presumably they become a migration group then...

Personally I like reading the messages.

Hehe, they turned my swordsman into a wrestler while he fought them to the death, IN THE RIVER! :D

Well anyway that experiment caused the death of my adventurer, no I easily fought off all the zombie fish, but I could have used the help on a cyclops.

If you have enough swimming skill, you can cross a river and just walk for a few minutes to the next world map square. It will work exactly as if they had been passed out and ditched instead of stranded by a river and ditched.
