Is sand related to biome?
« on: August 18, 2008, 06:36:06 am »

Since there are parameters that exclusively spawn sand deserts, i wonder if it's possible to enforce sand in other places as well by tinkering with parameters. Is this possible and so yes, how?

If you edit the raws and remove all soil types bar sands, then you get sand everywhere, no exceptions.

Arid biomes, like rocky wasteland, desert and badlands have sand. It's caused by infrequent, but dramatic rainfall leading to rapid erosion, I believe. Oceans too, but basically you are gonna want to look at very arid regions.

So, I believe it has something to do with low drainage and infrequent rainfall on a sedimentary rock layer. Something like that.

Deserts are often found in rain shadows in the real world. Look for a place where you couldn't see the ocean because mountains are in the way. Based on that, it would make sense that an arid landscape with a good supply of mountains would be the best bet.

Then again, you could just turn water all the way down.

I already know that but i was wondereing if there's a certain combination of biomes that's an about 90% failsafe way of getting sand in forests/swamps.
