Trampling

Is there a way to stop my dwarves from trampling the grass in an existing game? My evil forest quickly turned into a white sand desert as I let the starting 7 loose

If so, will it affect the save itself? Would be nice if the save worked after updating to whatever version comes next

The GRASSTRAMPLE token. Set it to 0.

It's not a matter of modding the game, but you can designate high traffic zones that go through the forest.  That way, dwarves will stick to that small path when possible, and will only veer off of it when they need to in order to get to where they're going.  The path will still be trampled, but but everything else should remain reasonably green (or become reasonably green again after some time has passed).

And Deon's suggestion will work with your current save.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

The first answer belongs to the modding thread, the second one belongs to the gameplay questions thread :).
I hope you're fine with your saplings now.

Seems to work

Can't seem to figure out what else is exposing the sand. There's patches all over even after restoring a beginning backup and having no one go there. Something to do with the forest being undead? Snow melted not long ago

It's not really about the saplings, the place just looks stupid with pure white sand around what's supposed to be a fetid rotting forest with zombie wildlife

Does the tag have any other effects?

Edit: well the calm area on the other side of the mountain has visible sand as well so it's definitely not the biome's fault

Sand just pokes up from under the grass/whatever to begin with, then animals, invaders, and felled trees will make sand pop up.
