[40d] Random encounters always within 2 squares of adventurer
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:08:25 pm »

My adventurers are often met with packs of wolves or bears in the wilderness. Which is normal, but the enemies are always surrounding or next to the adventurer, within one or two squares. I don't remember this always being the case, usually they were a bit further off, sometimes even too far to be found. I'm sorry if this has already been reported. The world is new and was made in this version. I have not edited any raws.

I was just about to report this myself.
Yeah, this has utterly ruined the possibility of playing as a ranged character, or of using any tactics whatsoever. This really needs a fix- no adventurer can play with bows anymore!

Bows are silly anyway!  Real men use mauls!

But also yeah, it's annoying to always be right next to the wolves.  It does maybe show that they sprung from ambush?  I dunno.

I think this has been around for a few versions, and it is very annoying.  I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned before, but I'm too lazy to go look for the thread.

Say....  What if different creatures were more or less stealthy?  Then a really, really stealthy creature would almost always be right on top of you, and less stealthy ones would show up farther and farther away.

Except the really stealthy creatures aren't visible, so you just walk away.

Mauls!?! Who uses mauls, real men rip those wolves and cougars apart with their bare hands!

But yeah, invisible animals would be really annoying in adventurer mode.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Rip them apart? No way. REAL men use the arms that were ripped off them as clubs to kill the wolves, then use the wolves as firewood for light for cutting down the entire forest to make a log cabin where you raise your family on food you kill everyday even though it's a real waste and you have plenty, then come back home and complain about the long day at work.

Did I mention you also saved some girl from the wolves that was being held captive over magma?

Perhaps there could be a skill check added; could this be given some association with the ambush skill? I.E., the higher your ambush skill, the further you start from the animals?
