Usually the problem transporting gobbos and such outside of their cages happens when the process gets interrupted.  In my case, it was usually by dwarves throwing up upon going outside and the gobbo getting loose, but it might happen with passing in tight corridors too.  But definitely the building cages next to drop holes works.  (Thieves can get loose during transport while still in cages though, I believe.)

Im building a pretty in depth 'gobbitorium'... awesome idea by the way, it will go great with my 4-elements colored arena. I plan on making 1 statue for each element. Ill give them a cave with like 3 houses, with ramps that lead up to a volcano. Then a little river that leads to a room behind a waterfall. For a sun.. i suppose ill make yellow gem-windows that you see through to a room of lava.

To my question... lemme get this straight, all you do is build the cage on the part of land that is part of the drop hole? Then i just select dump? Suppose i should turn off my other drop pits first, or do they go to the closest? Also, would making a pit/pond zone work as well?

Over the last week or so I've been thining of making an underground "habitat" type place, with a large cave, some expansive caverns/ledges and a (fake - pumps) underground river flowing through the middle. I have a lot of trapped alligators, some tame and some not and a few goblins and I was going to add pretty much anything I could trap or get from the elves to the mix as well and just see what happened. How long could the goblins hold out before being eaten by the alligators? Would the tame alligators and the untame ones fight? Just how tough is the giant leopard?

Incidentally I found that an 5 z-level drop into water 3zlevels deep (as in 8 in total) will give goblins 1 or 2 red wounds, multiple yellow wounds and all sorts of bashed thir toes and suchlike. They all drowned but not before splishing about for a bit -there was nowhere for them to go in that situation, I was just sacrificing them (as you do) but it is what gave me the idea and gives more info on how far you can drop a goblin whilst still retaining some semblance of mobility!

Has anyone found a good way of letting dwarves watch without getting scared? I imagine this really means so that they can't actually see the beasties, but it would be nice if I could pretend they weren't thick enough to think the drowning entombed goblin 8 levels below them is a mortal threat. :p

I pit all my goblins. It's easy, just build redundant backups in case the goblin gets loose.

Room 1 is the control room. This is a room of arbitrary size where you locate any levers and other things you need to control the pitting operation. Use a one space corridor to get to this room. Line the entrance with cage traps. This is your escape backup.

Room 2 is the pit/staging area. Separated from Room 1 by a levered door or floodgate (The Outer door ). Use a 1 space corridor, again lined with traps. This room has nothing but a 1 tile pit leading to the first level of the dungeon, and a door linking to Room 3.

Room 3 is the dungeon entrance. Again, a 1 space corridor lined with cage traps links this to Room 2. Use a levered door or floodgate, operated from the control room, to control access. This is the Inner door.

To use: Place occupied cage in Control Room. Open Outer Door. Send someone to pit the goblin. This is best done by an accomplished wrestler, if you can manage that. They seem to get away a lot less from them. If the goblin gets loose, he should run straight into a waiting trap. Start over.

To send in your gladiators, open the outer door and station them in Room 2. Close Outer Door and open Inner Door. Change the soldier's station to the farthest spot in the dungeon. Watch the carnage!

I say doors or floodgates, but I only use floodgates. I hear the thieves can pick locks.

When we say you dump the goblins in, we mean you use a pit/pond designation.

I thought adding the tag [exotic_tameable] or just the tag [tameable] to their files would be enough, on the other hand, they are not domestic or whatever...
