Chasms and pipes don't always break the surface?
I embarked on a map earlier that the finder said had a magma pipe (and it displayed within the embark rectangle) and couldn't find it.  Didn't do any digging to see if it was burried, I was looking for a quick start.  Similar thing happened just now with a chasm (not a pit) in that only the *barest* ends of the one end of the chasm breaches the surface, the entire rest of the cut is burried under a mountain (funny: the wagon is dead center over the chasm).

Edit:
Found a site-finder-chasm (it showed as a #) that was a bottomless pit.  Also buried under the top layer (had to dig down 2 levels).

Correct, they don't.

I've had a pipe and chasm (on two separate occasions) be 4z levels below the lowest above-ground plane.

Why would they always break the surface?  :-\

Magma pipes IMO should break the surface always (isn't that what Toady fixed that caused the magma-on-chasm bug?)

Chasms don't, of course, I just wanted to make sure.
