[39c] Butchery smoking, not on fire.
« on: July 23, 2008, 12:57:29 am »

As stated, in Fortress mode my butchery has started belching out massive amounts of smoke. Nothing is burning. All it contains is horse bones and skull and they certainly aren't on fire. It's been smoking profusely for about a game year now. No other effect.

Dammit that would have been a really good idea, but I bulldozed it and built a new one and the problem hasn't repeated itself.

Do you have magma on the map? in my current 39c game I noticed that once I'd broken into the magma vent, fire snakes were able to roam my fortress freely, as I had no cats to hunt vermin.

I found my food stockpile was smoking - the fire snake probably set a wooden barrel on fire in my food stockpile - the barrel disappeared, and I was left with some !!!donkey meat!!! on the stockpile floor (which I immediately forbid).

In a previous version I'd had fire snakes burn a barrel near my forges but in that case the contents were liquid (milk I think) and the barrel just disappeared, but left the liquid on the floor (which had to be cleaned up).

Good point Langdon, I do have an uncapped magma vent, so magma type critters are free to roam, however I have cats and they are pretty quick at hunting vermin. In any case, nothing was displaying as on fire.

Sounds like flies to me. They look like smoke, and if there's chunks and stuff, they may well be buzzing around.

No there is no way it's flies. For one, there is absolutely heaps of the stuff, reaching up several z levels, and also when I check it out, it calls it smoke. ;)

Another possibility - did you just butcher a fire imp?

In my 39d game, I had a butcher shop up before I sent my marksdwarves in to clean out the magma vent. The new ethics system (in place of the BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD tag) means your dwarves now butcher imps, and I was surprised to see flame and smoke appear out of my butchery when a fire imp corpse was butchered. Apparently, fire imp fat explodes on contact with air (as using [T] on the butcher shop afterwards showed skin, bones and meat, but no fat).

Of course, in my game the flames and smoke disappeared after a short while, and the butcher suffered no ill effects - if your smoke doesn't disappear then that might be your bug.

Whoa, I just had dwarfs butcher an imp too.. kinda scary  when the fat exploded into red clouds...  Anyway, are we sure this is not a bug?

Oh great, they just stored the meat in a barrell... apparently imp meat has such a high standing temperature that it set the barrel on fire.  I hope this doesn't go the way of boatmurdered...

*edit* yep, the fortress is toast... fire spread to other barrels in the food stockpile, and it all went sky high. :(

the bug is that fat burns at the temprature it comes out of the imp
the other items have pre-defined boiling and melting temps, even in the raws that keep the creature from litterally exploding, rather than figuratively exploding.
