Fishing for babies
« on: August 04, 2008, 01:57:03 pm »

Well a pumping accident resulted in my well room getting filled with water, and during the confusion someone dropped a baby into a well, now its dead and I'm at a lose at to how to get it out. the well is connected to a lake that  covers half the map(I channeled out an enclave with a 1 square wide entrance) is there any way to fish it out, or am I going to have to attempt to  Pump the water out and bury it?

Use the baby as carp bait.

You'd have to pump the water out to get it out.

Or you could just let it stay in there to rot and flavor your well. Mmm, rotten dwarf flavored water.

I Pumped the water out using two spare pumps I had, grabbed the babies, dismantled the pumps and rebuilt the floor.

luckily because I carve fortifications into the one wide entrance, to stop carp getting in I had a ramp that I'd just floored over, so unflooring to spaces for the pumps, and the ramp was a 5minute job.

I wish i'd buried the baby, but as I wanted the dwarves to get it out fast I'd marked it for dumped.

Now It's been buried ala magma.

At least you won't get any of the pesky unhappiness associated with a loved one being left out to rot.

Limul Dudledardle has been undecided lately.  One of her children was cremated recently.   She lost a child to tragedy recently.

Limul Dudledardle has been ecstatic lately.  One of her children was cremated recently.   She lost a child to tragedy recently.  She ate in a legendary dining room lately.

Fixed. ::)

You realise that you can un-dump something enroute, right?

All you have to do is zoom in on whoever is holding it, select the item, and remove the dump flag - they'll drop it. Or carry it to the appropriate stockpile, if it's an item you have a stockpile for. You could also forbid it to make them drop it no matter what.

"Yeah, I dropped my baby in the well and had to watch it's corpse slowly decompose but WOW what a great dining room!"

Ironically I do have a legendary dining room, I've not had a single tantrum, even during the great "goblins wandered in the front door and ended up in the depot" massacre of 201, they killed an entire elven caravan though and I got to keep the goods. So I think the dwarves were contented.

At first glance, I thought topic is called "Fishing with babies". Must pay more attention, though.

I dont think theres is any contest between the choices of an army of babies and an army of carp.

Too bad there isn't a way to make baby's differ from the parent race - like giving dwarven babies a lethal bite attack and superior damage block.

I suppose for now war babies cannot be a reality...

That'd be great for modding: have creatures that lay eggs that are actual immobile creatures, that then hatch into a larva, that then spins a cocoon, that then hatches into the adult creature.

Or a phoenix that, upon death, drops a corpse that is a pile of ashes and a phoenix egg, that then later hatches into a phoenix.
