I made a stone that you could smelt into turtles, once... couldn't get the little buggers to drop shells, though...

Also channeling a brook can be an important source of desperately needed stone pump mechanisms if you embarked on a biome with an aquifer

IIRC, you channel the brook: it becomes a channel filled with water, with stone at the bottom.
