So I have a fort where I had accumulated a half dozen caged elephants, and I wanted to train them.  Hence, I put a tame elephant job at the kennels with repeat.

Result:  the dwarves repeated taming the first elephant.  That is, they brought it food to tame it once, then since the job was on repeat, brought it food to tame it again, and again, and again...

Thus, instead of a herd of tame elephants, they ended up with a herd of still wild elephants, minus one tame elephant which is no doubt very tame indeed.

If I remember correctly, this is because when you queue a taming job at the kennels, you select a specific animal to be tamed, not a general type of animal to be tamed. Therefore, when you tell the tamer to repeat a "tame elephant" job, you're telling him to tame that specific elephant over and over again.

It's still quite annoying, though.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Yeah when you select an animal out of the list, you aren't selecting a "type" of animal, you are selecting a specific one.  Would be nice if it didn't try to re-tame a tame animal, but that's gotta be pretty low on the shit-to-do list I'd bet.  Sucks to waste all that food though.  :(

Heh. I didn't know that dwarves actually brought food to animals to tame them. I really like Toady's attention to details. Too bad we can pass by so many of those details without realizing they exist.

Too bad it can't become plump.  "A plump elephant (tame)".  I'll note down the bug.

I'm not sure what list of items can be used to tame animals, but I saw one of my dwarves bring what appeared to be a pile of BONES to tame a fox ...

Fetch?

Foxes have the [BONECARN] tag, IIRC.  It means they eat bones.  Eating bones gives them a happy thought, but there's a possibility of a fox suffocating from getting one stuck in her throat.

This bug has cropped up in 38c for me, as well.  I haven't captured any wild animals in 39(a-e), but I had a bunch of camels in one of my older forts.  It tamed a few of them with a Tame Animal (R) job, then just kept bringing food over to one animal.

They fed it plump helmets, which the elephant ate.

And doing so left all the seeds in the cage.
