Currently, dwarves don't dig a channel on the square they're on. It would be great if they would dig themselves into a hole, so vertical shafts (for traps, drop chutes, water drains and later for lightshafts (the walls coated with silver mirrors), chimneys, ventilation,..)  can be dug without an accompanying stairwell. Maybe slower, because they have to be a little more careful not to pick themselves in the feet. Maybe to be implemented along with ladders, so they have a way to get out when you don't want to dig further down.

Has it occurred to you that dwarves are not allowed to dig directly under themselves for a reason?

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

I can't check at the moment, but if they remove ramps from below, you could do it with ramps.

They aren't quite as careful when channeling out the floor where another dwarf stands.. or when they're building a wall that will block themselves, so for consistency :)

A solution to that could be another type of designation, break instead of dig/mine. The normal dig/mine designation would then give a warning and/or cancel (for damp stone, smoothed walls, engravings, warm stone, potential falls, etc.) while the break designation would break through anything, constructions included, regardless of the ill effects. That would make ordinary digging in an aquifer area safer too, and somewhat easier not to dig out your smoothed/engraved walls by mistake.
