Dwarves name a resident fire imp
« on: August 05, 2008, 08:07:26 am »

So, some of my dwarves have decided to name one of the local fire imps:

Kib Usânkogan.
"Kib Murderedboat".

Looks like your fortress is screwed. Or blessed, seeing as the words are reversed.

Blessed, I hope. The fire imp in question is essentially trapped in the mouth of a volcano/magma pipe as I've walled-off and placed grates to limit magma beastie access to roast dwarves. There is a walkway several z's above, though, so my farmers can spit/hurl into the volcano when they pass by, and when my practicing siege operators' shots go wide, they end up in the volcano enclosure—so my dwarves aren't completely out of contact with the fire imps. (Actually, I had considered carving fortifications in the walls of my smithy/smelter rooms where they overlook the pipe, but thought better of it when I learned that imps could shoot back.)

How often do dwarves name "resident" creatures, anyway, and what significance does it have (if any)?

I think they name 'em when the kill and/or had enough contact with them.

Now you must sacrifice living things annually to the imp, or else face flaming death!

I know that in one of my fortresses, every singe cave swalloman (there were about 20) was named.  It's funny, they were all named about five at a time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I finally figured out that they were killing the random foxes and unicorns that came across the map from time to time.  Pity they didn't take out the goblins, or the hydra...

Yeah, creatures seem to get names the second they kill anything in this version. A kobold thief got mauled by my five stray dogs in one game and the one that got the killing blow (bite?) got named. Wonder what impact this might have on the taming of named wild creatures.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I always like it when I get a Dwarf named Kib, I always draft him into the military as a second in command and say 'Kib' in Zap Brannigan's voice every time I issue him an order...
